Setting up breadcrumbs

The breadcrumbs feature in Asset Essentials gives Account Administrators, Supervisors, and Site Administrators the ability to track a technician’s whereabouts when they are out on a job, provide quicker response times to citizen requests, increase safety precautions, reduce liability, boost day-to-day efficiency, and plan for future work. Once breadcrumbs are configured in the account, they can start to be tracked on the map. *Note: This feature is available to Asset Essentials clients for an additional cost. Please contact your Sales Representative or Client Services if you are interested in purchasing this feature.

Configuring breadcrumbs

*Note: A Global Administrator must activate this feature in the system settings. If your account does not have a Global Administrator, please contact Client Services to activate this feature.

  1. Click on the Admin menu icon, then select Configurations.
  2. Under the Misc section, select System Setting.
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. In the Breadcrumbs section, check the box next to Breadcrumbs.
  5. In the Sync GPS Breadcrumbs every drop-down menu, select the frequency at which you would like the user's collected breadcrumbs to be synced to the map.
  6. In the Collect GPS Breadcrumbs every drop-down menu, select the frequency at which you would like the user's breadcrumbs to be collected.

       Bright Idea:

We recommend you consider a few points when selecting the frequencies as described above.

Sync GPS Breadcrumbs Frequency Setting

  • Syncing requires a data/internet connection.
  • One minute is the minimum frequency available, which means that the current location plotted on the map would be no more than one minute delayed.
  • Large amounts of data, such as when the sync frequency is five minutes or longer, can result in a longer time to sync the breadcrumbs if the mobile user is in an area with poor connectivity.
  • Frequent syncing gives the most accurate picture of where your technician is currently. However, it can have an impact on battery life, especially with older devices.

Collect GPS Breadcrumbs Frequency Setting

  • It is preferable to have a lower collection interval, such as 15 seconds, to optimize how the breadcrumbs are plotted on the map.
  • On the other hand, having a frequent collection of breadcrumbs can have an impact on battery life, especially with older devices.
